Organization:

This conference was made possible by the University of Mashhad, under the authority of the International Center for Dialogue between Civilizations, in Tehran. The Scientific committee consists of Professors M.H. Papoli-Yazdi (Department of Geography, University of Mashhad), M.R. Hashemi (University of Mashhad) A. Haervan (University of Mashhad), Z. Tavana (University of Shahid Beheshti), and A. Modarres (California State University, Los Angeles).

Program:

The program was conceived to cover the main problems of development in Iran and compare them with those encountered in other countries. Some of the suggested topics of discussion are:

Development and religion
The effects of religion and its cultural aspects on the nature of states and their approaches to development
Culture, oil and development
Cultural attitudes, hydrology and development
Cultural attitudes, technical changes and development
The effects of technical modernization on cultures
The role of cities and their cultural traditions in development and its evolution
Specific problems of nomadic societies in development
The effects of illicit drugs on the society and development
The side effects of development: pollution, environmental imbalance and cultural reactions.

Travel Arrangements:

Participants coming from Western Europe must arrive in Tehran no later than May 14, and then fly to Mashhad.All Iran Air agencies will issue a round-trip domestic ticket free of charge for anyone booking his/her ticket to Iran via Iran Air, so all participants are advised to take advantage of the opportunity.

There are more than 10 flights to Mashhad from Tehran every day. The last one leaves Tehran about 11:30 p.m. All participants are advised to inform the Conference Secretariat of their arrival time well in advance (at least a week in advance). Participants will be picked up from the Mashhad airport by local organizers. Guides will be available at Tehran and Mashhad airports. Should participants arrive earlier than May 14, they must book their own accommodations in Tehran.

Location:

The auditorium, Faculty of Humanities, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad.

Inauguration ceremony will be held at the auditorium.

There may be concurrent sessions held at different lecture halls within the Faculty. This will depend on the number of participants. Since Iranian scholars are also going to attend the conference and deliver presentations, it is quite possible that there will be concurrent sessions.

Time:

Sessions will take place from 8 :00 -12 :00 a.m. and 4 :00 -7 :00 p.m. May 15-17 (except for the opening session).

Visits to places of interest in Mashhad will take place throughout Thursday May 19 and in the evenings from 19:30 - 21:30 Monday-Wednesday, May 15-17.

Lunch will be served at 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. at a hotel restaurant, which is located within walking distance of the conference.

Dinner will be served at any time convenient for the guests, starting from 7:30 p.m.

Accommodation:

Accommodation for the participants is available free of charge.

Post-Conference Fieldtrip:

A fieldtrip to either Isfahan or Shiraz can be arranged. Those interested in either of the options should inform the Conference Secretariat well in advance (by May 1st at the latest). The price will not exceed $ 80.00 U.S. per day per person.

Cost:

There will be no cost for the participants in Mashhad; individuals accompanying the lecturer participants should pay for their expenses. They should also pay registration fees.

Paper Submittal:

Title and abstract (one page) before the 1st of March.

Text before the 1st of April. Should not exceed 6,000 words.

Visa:

The Secretariat of the Conference must receive as soon as possible all requests for visas, along with a photocopy of the first pages of the participant’s passport. These documents should be sent as soon as possible to Dr M. R. Hashemi, the local organizer, at the fax number listed below. ** NOTICE: Deadline for sending this information is March 10, 2000.

Registration Fees

The Registration fee is $ 200.00 U.S. for participants coming from Europe, the United States and the developed countries of Asia and Oceania, and $100.00 US for all other participants.

Fees will be collected on site at the time of registration. Payments should be made in cash.
