DoustAneh mohtaram,
Before har cheez, I hope your Eid was a very mobArak one. Hopefully, by now you've done all your Eid deedanees and avoided all the bAz deedanees, and are just dying for another soul nourishing session of doreh.
Well, here it is. The first doreh of 1373. The last doreh of 1372 turned into a party! So we're gonna start this year on a more serious note. The topic will be Scientology. Most people have either heard the name Scientology or are familiar with its founder L. Ron Hubbord. But for those who have absolutly no clue what I'm talking about, L. Ron Hubbord created his own system of helping people improve themselves, get closer to their inner selves, and be more in control of their own lives. He traveled extensively and a lot of his experiences during these journeys are reflected in the rules he has devised for his church of Scientology.
I know, just by having mentioned the name to people, that there are some negative views out there about Scientology and its founder L. Ron Hubbord. The thing that was amazing to me though, was that most people who seemed to get defensive as soon as they heard the name Scientology mentioned, didn't really have a good reason for their reaction. Most of them had those negative views bacause of what they had heard through other people.
This is going to be a chance for us to learn about Scientology first hand, ask questions about it, and form our own opinions. We'll hear all about L. Ron Hubbord and his work from someone who's been involved with the church for many years. He is one of the highest ranked Scientologists, called an "OT", or "Operating Thatom" (we'll find out what that means on Thursday!). Our guest speaker's name is Bob Adams.
Bob Adams is the president of DUX Software Corporation in Palo Alto. DUX is a UNIX software publishing house and has been in business for 4 years. Bob played professional football as a tight-end in the NFL for 8 years. He is an educational consultant and has worked in China. Bob has completed over 120 syndicated radio programs across the country reaching over 50 million listeners on the subject of anabolic steroids and athletic performance, which translates to two things: first, he has a lot of public speaking experience; and second, if we get tired of hearing about Scientology, we can change the topic and talk about NFL and steroids!
Past experience tells me that as soon as a topic smells mildly religious, it raises some eye browes and some people start feeling uncomfortable. But I think as long as we keep an open mind and remember that our goal is to learn, not to judge, we can benefit from any talk.
shAd bAshee,
ka.
